Sacramento Individual Therapist What are your gifts? What are your strengths? It is my belief that everyone has unique strong points and we have an inner drive toward using them. We want to be appreciated for exactly who we are, without hiding or pretending. We want to relax into our own shoes, put down the weight of others’ expectations, and drop the limiting beliefs we have adopted. When we can do that, that’s when we begin to pick up our real work in the world and feel truly joyous, because we are living authentically and we know our life matters. That’s when our relationships become marked by real emotional connection, comfort, and fun! Even if it’s hard to hear that true voice, if you’ve gotten into a habit of letting others dictate your choices, if your confidence has been lost under the weight of life’s pressures and busyness, I still believe you have real power that is unique to you, and I would like to help you find it. Using traditional talk therapy, mindfulness and behavior techniques, and EMDR, I have worked with people who suffer from anxiety, depression, childhood abuse, losses, sexual trauma, some eating disorders, addictions, and unstable relationships. Have you been…
Grief Counseling
Sacramento Grief Counseling Do you love someone who is gone? Have you lost the thing you thought defined you? Were there dreams and plans that never materialized? There are many kinds of losses: Death Divorce Job Loss Pet Loss Loss of confidence Infirtility Lost innocence… and when we lose something, we feel grief. Because everyone loves differently, everyone grieves differently. There is no right way. But sometimes grief is so powerful, you need a guide to help navigate you through it. When Someone Dies You may feel shocked, or confused. You may feel sadness, anger, loneliness, or shakiness. Then there may be times when you laugh honestly and openly. All of this is normal. Yet sometimes issues of self-blame, unanswered questions, and feelings of guilt become overwhelming. Tragic and very sudden deaths often bring complicated layers of feelings. I can provide you with strategies to manage the intensity of these emotions, so that you can move through the process of mourning and still live your life. There is often a spiritual awareness when someone dies and I am happy to incorporate your own faith into the therapy. So many things change when someone dies. It is nice to have greater comforts at hand. When losses are Old When children experience death, hard…
EMDR Therapy for Trauma
Sacramento Trauma and EMDR Therapist One of the leading treatments to relieve the negative effects of psychological trauma is EMDR. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a method of psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and shown to be effective for the treatment of trauma. When a person is very upset, their brain cannot process information as it does ordinarily. One moment becomes “frozen in time,” and remembering a trauma may feel as bad as going through it the first time. This is because the images, sounds, smells, and feelings associated with the memory haven’t changed. These traumatic memories can have lasting negative effects that interfere with the way a person sees the world and the way they relate to other people. Sometimes people can feel “triggered” or “hooked.” They have a strong gut-dropping reaction to something they think should be manageable. EMDR may be able to help with this as well. Following successful EMDR treatment, a person may no longer “relive” the images, sounds, and feelings associated with the trauma when the event is brought to mind. You still remember what happened, but it is less emotionally disturbing. Depending on how comfortable you are with EMDR, it can often…

About Sharon Skelton, LMFT
About Sharon Skelton, MFT Sacramento Therapist Psychotherapy is a second career for me, and the one I can foresee doing until I’m 80. Every day, I am amazed by the profound changes that can happen when people take time to talk and listen in a safe place. I came to the practice of psychotherapy through the field of education. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from UCLA and a Masters in Counseling Psychology from John F. Kennedy University. I hold an earned specialization in Children and Adolescent Therapy. At UCLA I trained to teach autistic children at the Clinic for the Behavioral Treatment of Children, and continued that work in the private sector for a number of years. I completed my education degree at San Francisco State University and taught schoolchildren ages 6 to 10 in a multiage classroom for quite a while. I’ve worked in counseling centers and mental health agencies, and as a school-based counselor in several districts. I am certified EMDR therapist and full member of EMDRIA, the EMDR International Association. My experience is that EMDR can be a remarkably effective addition to psychotherapy. I am a student of yoga and meditation, and have been…
