Mathew Heake, AMFT

Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist

My name is Matthew Heake, and I’m a trauma and attachment therapist who works with teens, adults, and couples navigating life’s hardest moments—whether that’s anxiety, OCD, insomnia, depression, or past wounds that haven’t healed.

I earned a B.A. in Psychology from CSU Sacramento and went on to earn a Master’s in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling from CSUS as well, graduating summa cum laude. I also enjoy being a regular guest speaker at my alma mater for undergraduate students learning about the field of counseling psychology.

I have advanced training in several evidence-based approaches, including EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention), and mindfulness. My style is compassionate, collaborative, and rooted in real-life experience. My goal is to help you build self-understanding and lasting change from the inside out.

For couples, I offer a warm, relational approach grounded in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT). We’ll explore the patterns playing out in your relationship, deepen emotional understanding, and create stronger, more secure bonds. Therapy becomes a space where connection is rebuilt, and new ways of relating can emerge.

I support individuals navigating life transitions, including career changes. With a mix of practical guidance and innovative tools—including thoughtful use of emerging technologies like AI—I help clients feel more grounded, prepared, and connected to their evolving purpose.

Outside of therapy, I’m a creative soul—musician, multimedia artist, and lifelong skateboarder. I’m also a parent and partner, walking my own path with authenticity and heart.

Services Offered:

EFT for Couples (Emotion Focused Therapy)

EFT helps couples move beyond conflict by focusing on the core emotions underneath. This approach supports deeper understanding, strengthens emotional bonds, and helps partners feel more seen, heard, and emotionally connected in their relationship.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a trauma-informed technique that taps into your brain’s natural ability to heal. By focusing on specific eye positions linked to emotional experiences, Brainspotting helps release stuck trauma and bring calm to the nervous system—often without needing to talk through every detail.

EMDR Midtown Sacramento

EMDR Therapy for Trauma

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps your brain heal from trauma by safely reprocessing painful memories so they lose their grip on the present. You’ll learn to feel safer in your body, calmer in your mind, and more in control of your story and emotions.

ACT for OCD Symptoms

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps you change your relationship with obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. Instead of fighting your mind, you’ll learn to notice thoughts without acting on them, and live in alignment with what truly matters to you.
